First, wastewater flows into the trap and slows down.
Next, grease rises to the top and food solids settle to the bottom.
Then, cleaner water flows out through the middle while grease stays contained in the trap.
Over time, grease and solids build up inside the unit. When that buildup gets too high, the trap becomes less effective. That’s when you’re more likely to get odors, slow drainage, and backups.
